Here’s The Skinny

The new strategy for repealing the Affordable Care Act may involve asking Republican senators to pass a relatively narrow piece of legislation that would leave 15 million people uninsured and cause premiums to rise 20 percent.

Events Unfolding Fast In D.C.

The ACA repeal with the Medicaid cuts is very fluid with many nuances, rules and details.

  • On July 25 the Senate voted narrowly to begin debate on a bill to repeal major provisions of the Affordable Care Act, but hours later, the Republican plan to replace President Barack Obama’s health law fell short of the votes it needed.
  • The Senate is expected to continue to attempt to pass some form of an ACA repeal and send it to a House/Senate Conference Committee.  It is unclear if they will be able to pass something that meets all the rules and if there will be any Democrats on the Conference Committee.
  • NYS House Republicans continue to be key to fending off massive Medicaid cuts.
  • Below is a link to a letter that CP of NYS has signed on to the NYS Congressional Delegation encouraging them to vote no on cuts.

The Waiting Game

The Senate is expected to hold a procedural vote on health care as early as today. Few people know just what the Senate will be voting on, or precisely when the vote will take place.

What Will They Do?

The U.S. Senate cold vote next week on a plan calling for monumental changes to Medicaid, a program which millions of Americans with disabilities rely on for doctor and hospital coverage to supports that enable them to live and work in the community. Or, they could vote on another bill that would repeal Obamacare without replacing it and strip millions of their access to healthcare. Or, they could vote on some other, entirely different bill.

Meanwhile, Back In The House of Representatives

Now that Senate Republicans have failed in their attempt to repeal and replace Obamacare and cut Medicaid, House Republicans are pushing a budget that aims to do all that and then some.
