At least 24 homes that care for people with intellectual disabilities have been forced to close their doors over the last year, according to the Maine Association for Community Service Providers. The organizations that operate the homes say they can’t find and retain enough qualified staff members to work for meager salaries.
Nearly 57 million people live with a disability, including 8 percent of children and 10 percent of nonelderly adults.
The care she gets is an optional benefit under federal Medicaid law, which means each state can decide whether to offer it and how much to spend.
“We’re worried about the implications of the plans in Congress,” said Max Donatelli. “People like Craig used to be hidden in institutions. We’re deathly afraid of going back to those days.”
Cuomo blamed lawmakers for failure to adopt more ethics reforms in the regular session that ended June 21.
