#bFair2DirectCare Campaign

#bFair2DirectCare is a voice for New Yorkers with developmental disabilities and a call to action to remind state leaders that direct care not-for-profit agency workers are agents of the state who need a fair rate of pay commensurate with their vital support responsibilities.

Not-for-profit developmental disability organizations receive 90 percent or more of their funding from government programs. These organizations have seen funding cuts and frozen budgets since 2008, and now face wage mandates and new labor rules without having the adequate funding to sustain them. In June of 2016 the #bFair2DirectCare coalition launched a Campaign to call on Albany to address this issue before the next state budget is adopted on April 1, 2017.

A series of news conferences, television and radio interviews and letter-writing campaigns garnered widespread bi-partisan support in the NYS Legislature. In late March, 2017 Governor Andrew Cuomo joined the legislature and committed to adding $55 Million to the 2017-18 NYS Budget to begin to pay direct care staff, and other low-wage workers at not-for-profit agencies more. The #bFair2DirectCare coalition is determined to convince our leaders in Albany that this is a good start, but not nearly enough. The coalition membership will continue its efforts to secure an additional $45 Million in each of the next five NYS Budgets to proved the funding necessary to pay these dedicated professionals a living wage.
